Meet La Nena and Madre Desmadrosa, the creators of Las Aguas Podcast

Article written by: Madre Desmadrosa

Picture this: it’s October 2022 in rainy ass Seattle, WA. Desmadrosa is returning from an all expenses paid trip by an irrelevant cis man (get your bag while you take his) y La Nena anda en la cocina haciendo de comer radiando inspiracion. As always, Desmadrosa is on IG, scrolling and scrolling. De repente, a post on IG catches their attention and Desmadrosa feels called to share with Nena! The post was a reel highlighting San Diego based creative, Sew Loka’s podcast, Skills Pay Bills (Read more about it here!). Sew Loka’s reel reminded Desmadrosa of all the ways the last two years had been very transformative for both Desmadrosa and Nena – everything from reevaluating their connections, to living in the same building and growing their friendship. Both Nena and Desmadrosa needed a loving push from the universe. They found a way to highlight local vendors and their own hustles to ensure we all get our bags, together. Anyways! The post is sent with the text saying, ‘we should start a podcast about our small businesses!! Lolol.’ Luckily, Nena was down and ready to create! The universe had slowly been getting louder and zooming in on what the ‘next creative move’ should be for the two. Something about creating with one another felt right, cosas del destino. Flowing and never ending, Las Aguas de abundancia was created with community and creativity front and center.

Y estas?

La Nena, the creator and mastermind behind THE Nena Thrifted, a collection of specialty thrifted clothes completely curated by Nena. Think, your cool sister's closet, minus the hair pulling. Nena, often referred to as the most stylish person within the friend group, whips up vintage outfits like magic. Leaving everyone feeling empowered and amazing, todo un fit! Born in Spokane, WA, Nena's Mexican and Honduran roots have been influential to the way she now conducts her business and the ways she decides to brand herself. Singing rancheras with her dad desde niña, you already know she kills it on the mic! Selena would be so proud, por que como la flor, when you see her brand, you know it’s all her! Nena Thrifted has been the portal to abundance mindset for Nena in so many ways. Nena says, “There is no one way to run a business, so there is no one way to get sales. It challenges the idea that things have to be done a certain way to get results. Success does not ultimately mean someone has to become the best at what they do and it does not mean someone has to be the worst. I am finding that resources and experiences are not finite or limited, I am making more and more connections. Creating an abundance mindset is having faith in joy and community, and really seeing and uplifting your fellow creatives.”

Madre Desmadrosa, un mar llene de abundancia. Desmadrosa is a queer non binary poet, creator of Mundo de la Madre, a poetry blog and the traveling pastry shop, Dulce Sol. Born in the Seattle area and raised in Boulevard Park (a neighborhood south of Seattle) con raices Purhepechas, Desmadrosa takes their lived experience and hood with them everywhere they go and every room they enter. Coming from a long lineage of badass and outspoken women, Desmadrosa saw first hand the ways the women in their family worked hard and got shit done. Learning from the best, Desmadrosa gained experience in owning a small business and vending from selling sunglasses on the busy streets of Tepito, CDMX with their Tia Chavela to selling pan en las calles de Tingambato, Michoacan with their Tia Rosa. With the creation of Dulce Sol, Desmadrosa has been able to heal money wounds by creating an extra source of income while also supporting community along the way. Dulce Sol flan is sold on a sliding scale and has been able to hold ‘Flan Fundraisers’ to support local mutual aids and for people within community to meet their financial needs. Desamdrosa adds, “My community has supported me during my financial struggles in the past, we have each others backs and are there for one another when we need it.” Abundance does not always have to equal monetary exchanges, we create abundance in all aspects of our lives.
